Hand Therapy with a Physiotherapist
At Agile we see Hand Therapy as a way of relieving pain, optimizing physical function, and ultimately improving performance, whatever form that takes.
Hand therapy is a specialized area of rehabilitation dedicated to treating conditions affecting the hands and upper extremities. Certified hand therapists (CHTs) are highly skilled occupational or physical therapists with advanced training in evaluating and treating hand and upper limb disorders. Whether you’ve experienced a trauma to your hand, or developed pain over time, hand therapy can help provide you the tools to navigate your recovery process and reach your goals. Hands are vital to our ability to interact with the world around us, and injury or pain can be frustrating or challenging. Your hand therapist’s ultimate goal is to help you return to optimal function so you can enjoy your life!
What can hand therapy help with?
Arthritis and degenerative conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
Traumatic injuries and post-surgical management for fractures, tendon repairs, nerve transfers, joint repairs/replacements, and more.
Soft tissue injuries and repetitive injuries of the hand, wrist, and elbow such as tennis elbow, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, and carpal tunnel
Chronic hand pain, CRPS
What to expect?
During your initial visit, a hand therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation to assess your condition and functional limitations. Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment plan will be developed to address your specific needs. Treatment may include therapeutic exercises, manual techniques, modalities (such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation), education on home exercises and ergonomics, and custom splinting if necessary.
What forms of treatment can be offered?
Custom splinting for a wide range of issues, including post-surgical and soft tissue injuries
Wound care after traumas or surgery
Nerve desensitization or sensation recovery
Swelling management
Exercises for strengthening, range of motion, scar mobility, and more.
Scar management for chronic and acute scars.
